James I Motes

James I. Motes is a litigation attorney at Dolan Divorce Lawyers, where he represents clients in divorce, custody, and other family law matters. He brings a thoughtful, steady approach to his work, helping clients understand the legal process, organize the issues in their case, and make informed decisions during difficult family transitions.

Before becoming an attorney, Attorney Motes spent many years as a public school educator, teaching high school Latin, English, and theater arts. That background continues to shape the way he works with clients, particularly in matters involving children, parenting concerns, communication challenges, and long-term family dynamics.

Attorney Motes earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut School of Law, where he also received a Human Rights Certificate. During law school, he interned with the Connecticut Attorney General’s Office in the Public Health and Education section and with a private education law firm in Westport. His legal and educational background gives him a valuable perspective in family law matters involving children, schools, and the practical realities families face outside the courtroom. 

Attorney Motes also serves on the Board of the Connecticut Children’s Law Center and is Chair of the Ethics Commission in Portland, where he lives with his wife and children. He was selected to the New England Super Lawyers Rising Star list in 2025 and 2026.

Attorney Motes holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Dallas, a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Massachusetts, and a Sixth-Year Certificate in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Connecticut Neag School of Education.
