Biography

I am a criminal defense attorney. I am responsible for and I proudly represent each and every one of my clients personally. I am honored to have been selected as one of the top 100 criminal defense attorneys in Connecticut by the American Society of Legal Advocates and the National Trial Lawyers each year since 2014.

Although I am a solo practitioner, I am not alone in my law office. I have a wonderful legal assistant, Kelley Finlan, who is most capable and very helpful to my clients. She is usually the voice they hear and speak with when they call my Willimantic, Connecticut law office. She frequently answers their questions, putting their minds at ease immediately. When she can't answer a question right away or after some research, she will talk with me. As soon as we have an answer, one of us will return the call to our client to advise.

We enjoy helping people who are in trouble. It doesn't happen in every case but with some frequency, we get to help someone out of a big jam and enable that person to turn his or her life around for the better. We find great satisfaction in helping to make that possible. In most cases, I am the only person standing up for my clients' rights and I am frequently the only thing that stands between my clients and jail.

When a lawyer defends a person charged with a crime, that lawyer not only defends the client but also all the rest of us. People don't realize that it is the criminal defense attorney who puts the brakes on the state's enormous apparatus for incarcerating people. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, over 700 people per 100,000 population! Without criminal defense lawyers challenging the state's police power, the state could lock-up people for no reason at all, without regard for our constitutional rights! Criminal defense lawyers really are the first-line defense against the tyranny of a police state. By vigorously asserting defendants' constitutional rights day-in and day-out, criminal defense lawyers stop the state from arresting people and locking them up for no good reason.

I believe in those constitutional rights that some regard as mere technicalities. Those constitutional rights and the criminal defense lawyers who vigorously defend them are our protection against becoming a police state. I am very proud to be a criminal defense attorney defending our liberty and democracy as well as my clients.

Potential clients often ask if I am aggressive; as if that were the most important trait in a criminal defense lawyer. The answer is, I am effective. I want to be as effective as I possibly can be in getting the best possible results for my clients. Aggression usually breeds aggression by the other side in return and interferes with effectiveness. So, I am only aggressive when I need to be. Most of the time, there is a better way to achieve the best result.

Since about 98 percent of all cases are resolved without trial, a good negotiating strategy is usually necessary to persuade prosecutors and judges to give my clients the best outcome. I have worked hard to learn and develop excellent negotiating skills that benefit my criminal defense clients. Usually, the best results for my clients are negotiated agreements.

Trial is the last resort when negotiation fails to achieve a satisfactory result. If a trial becomes necessary, I’m perfectly willing and able to go to trial and fight to defend my clients’ rights and freedom.

Do You Need a Good Lawyer?

Finding a lawyer on the internet can be scary. And I live out of state. A relative is in serious trouble. The family is in chaos. A neighbor in my building in NYC is a lawyer. (She's actually kind of a big deal.) I asked her if she could recommend a criminal lawyer in Connecticut. She told me to call... Jerome (Jerry) Paun. I left a message in his office. It was promptly returned by a really nice woman, Kelly. I gave her some information and she looked up the details on her computer. She actually made me feel better. Since I couldn't come into the office, she scheduled a phone consultation for the next day. She said there would be no charge. Attorney Paun called me at the scheduled time. He spent almost an hour on the phone with me, even though he knew I couldn't be the one to hire him. He had looked up the charges and told me what the punishments could be. He answered all my questions. He was a wealth of knowledge. He even knew the answers to my questions about prison. He wasn't arrogant or vague or sarcastic. He was kind and extremely knowledgeable. I wanted to cry. He came highly recommended. After speaking with him, I understand why. I am passing all this information on to my family. I would not hesitate to hire him. He is everything you want a lawyer to be and more.

Jerome is the best lawyer I met

I was charged by police with disorderly conduct and Class B misdemeanor. I donot know Jerome before, just knew him from his website. After I emailed my case to Lawyer Jerome Paun's office, I got an appointment in the next day. I should say his secretary is also very professional and friendly. Jerom...e analyzed my case in details from basic laws to all possible court decisions, also recommended what I should make the best choice for myself. His advice eliminated all my worries after I went his office in the first meeting with him. I felt that he is an experienced lawyer and will do the best for the customers. I strongly recommended him if you want find a right lawyer, Jerome is the best one worthy to hire.

Went above and beyond

Attorney Paun was extremely knowledgable and informative when dealing with my DUI case. He immediately helped calm me down and walked me through the entire process. He explained everything so that I completely understood what was going on and what I would have to deal with. He helped make this ter...rible process much easier on me. I would higly recommend him to any of my friends and family. I will definitely be seeking his services out in the future if I ever need them.

Jerome Paun just gets it done

Jerome and his team where great! I was dealing with an issue from 13 years ago and was dealing with it from another state. Attorney Paun and his team kept me in the loop at all times. My case was unique to say the least, but attorney Paun knew the laws, he knew the intricacies of the court room and ...had a good reputation amongst his piers. I highly recommend his services to anyone, attorney Paun is a no nonsence lawyer, who will shoot you straight and wont sugar coat it in the process!

Serious Juvenile Matter - Professionally Handled

I had the unfortunate occasion to require a criminal defense attorney who worked with minors. Enter into the equation, Attorney Jerome W. Paun and the matter was handled both professionally and with expediency. As a parent of four children never before faced with such a situation Attorney Paun was ...informative, taking a great deal of time explaining the laws to both my son and I. We were well informed of all the potential outcomes and my sons rights and obligations to the court system. Attorney Paun was well versed in the juvenile court system and assisted us in making the best of an unpleasant, potentially serious situation. My sonâ€™s outcome was as Attorney Paun had anticipated. Although I hope never to require his services again, I would wholeheartedly recommend Attorney Paun to others in need of a seasoned professional attorney.
