Biography

I am a criminal defense attorney. I am responsible for and I proudly represent each and every one of my clients personally. I am honored to have been selected as one of the top 100 criminal defense attorneys in Connecticut by the American Society of Legal Advocates and the National Trial Lawyers each year since 2014.

Although I am a solo practitioner, I am not alone in my law office. I have a wonderful legal assistant, Kelley Finlan, who is most capable and very helpful to my clients. She is usually the voice they hear and speak with when they call my Willimantic, Connecticut law office. She frequently answers their questions, putting their minds at ease immediately. When she can't answer a question right away or after some research, she will talk with me. As soon as we have an answer, one of us will return the call to our client to advise.

We enjoy helping people who are in trouble. It doesn't happen in every case but with some frequency, we get to help someone out of a big jam and enable that person to turn his or her life around for the better. We find great satisfaction in helping to make that possible. In most cases, I am the only person standing up for my clients' rights and I am frequently the only thing that stands between my clients and jail.

When a lawyer defends a person charged with a crime, that lawyer not only defends the client but also all the rest of us. People don't realize that it is the criminal defense attorney who puts the brakes on the state's enormous apparatus for incarcerating people. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, over 700 people per 100,000 population! Without criminal defense lawyers challenging the state's police power, the state could lock-up people for no reason at all, without regard for our constitutional rights! Criminal defense lawyers really are the first-line defense against the tyranny of a police state. By vigorously asserting defendants' constitutional rights day-in and day-out, criminal defense lawyers stop the state from arresting people and locking them up for no good reason.

I believe in those constitutional rights that some regard as mere technicalities. Those constitutional rights and the criminal defense lawyers who vigorously defend them are our protection against becoming a police state. I am very proud to be a criminal defense attorney defending our liberty and democracy as well as my clients.

Potential clients often ask if I am aggressive; as if that were the most important trait in a criminal defense lawyer. The answer is, I am effective. I want to be as effective as I possibly can be in getting the best possible results for my clients. Aggression usually breeds aggression by the other side in return and interferes with effectiveness. So, I am only aggressive when I need to be. Most of the time, there is a better way to achieve the best result.

Since about 98 percent of all cases are resolved without trial, a good negotiating strategy is usually necessary to persuade prosecutors and judges to give my clients the best outcome. I have worked hard to learn and develop excellent negotiating skills that benefit my criminal defense clients. Usually, the best results for my clients are negotiated agreements.

Trial is the last resort when negotiation fails to achieve a satisfactory result. If a trial becomes necessary, I’m perfectly willing and able to go to trial and fight to defend my clients’ rights and freedom.

Awesome Attorney

Attorney Paun was referred to me when I needed to hire an attorney to defend my son. That referral was spot on. My son was facing several charges, which if convicted, would have resulted in serious prison time. To make matters even worse, my son is a Type 1 diabetic. Attorney Paun made sure that... all required medical documents were at the courthouse at the time of my son’s arraignment to ensure my son would receive the proper medical care at whatever facility he would be sent. Once my son was arrested and sent to county jail, Attorney Paun explained the worst-case scenario and what he planned to do for my son. My son also had a federal case pending. Attorney Paun consulted with my son's federal attorney to have all charges run concurrently. Initially, my son had six charges being brought against him. Attorney Paun was able to get these charges reduced to two and the remaining two charges reduced to lesser charges, which resulted in shorter prison and probation times. This is more than what we ever dared to hope for. Attorney Paun’s extensive knowledge of criminal law and superior negotiating skills played a huge part with this outcome. If anyone finds themselves in need of a criminal lawyer, I highly recommend Attorney Paun.

One of the best in Connecticut

Attorney Paun was my third lawyer for my expungement process and I don't think I could have asked for a better human being. He was kind, caring, compassionate, and extremely detailed when it came to the beginning of the process all the way to the end of the process. He knew exactly the issues I had o...n my previous attempts and knew how to combat them if they occurred again. He had so much faith in me and could see how much I have changed since my offense that he was going to do everything possible to get my expungement and he did just that. I know for a fact that you can not go wrong at all by hiring this amazing attorney. I highly recommend him to anyone out there that needs someone to fight for them more than any other attorney has before.

May 8, 2021: Having to hire a criminal lawyer to represent our son was extremely stressful, particularly when you take into consideration of being a minority in this day and age. Therefore, our primary concerns were not just to hire a competent attorney who would represent our son’s interest as a hum...an being rather than stereotypical another Black man in the criminal justice system but to hire an attorney to provide unbiased legal defense to our adult son whom we love unequivocally, in spite of. So, when we contacted Attorney Jerome Paun of Willimantic, CT., we had multiple questions for him. Our first statement to him was that we’re a Black family. Then, we proceeded by asking him whether or not he had represented African Americans. As he was professionally answering our questions, we developed a sense of comfort and decided to hire him. After his first court appearance on behalf of our son, we realized that we became convinced that we made the right choice. Being aware of our worries, Attorney Paun contacted us right after the court session ended ( since it was in the midst of COVID-19 and we couldn’t attend). He explained succinctly what transpired in the court room and the expected outcome. He also provided us with information on our son’s physical and mental status at best he could describe them. As Attorney Paun continued on the case, he provided us with regular oral and written updates. He also sent letters to our son to keep him updated as well. However, we were most impressed in the compassionate and humane tone of his correspondences to our son. In fact, he used his preferred nickname in addressing him and acknowledged in his letter that he was aware that he was not in an ideal place or situation at the time and that he was doing his best in his legal representation. To make a long story short, we were pleasantly surprised of the outcome. And, while we do not wish anyone to ever need a criminal lawyer, sometimes things happen when you least expect them. Therefore, we would recommend Attorney Jerome Paun to anyone because he demonstrates professional respect and integrity, honesty, commitment to the legal profession, as well as human compassion and a a non-judgmental attitude. As we’re writing this review, our son is home with us. For that, we are forever indebted to Attorney Jerome Paun.

Exellent lawyer!
