A significant part of my law practice involves an area of law not easily classified: I defend outdoor shooting ranges nationally, achieving unparalleled results over the past 20 years defending them against litigants such as developers, neighbors and town commissions who raise issues involving safety, noise, zoning and environmental, etc. Located in Avon, Connecticut for the past thirty years, I'm originally from the Upper Valley area of Norwich, Vermont/Hanover, New Hampshire, where my father was immersed in starting tech companies and in new technologies, research and teaching in the field of engineering, entrepreneurship and inventing. As a business owner, and coming from a family of business owners, I understand the needs and objectives of entrepreneurs. Starting out as a corporate/business lawyer and then moving into the fields of environmental law and constitutional law, I have practiced in Connecticut at large firms and at my own firm since 1986. I have been involved in litigation over outdoor shooting ranges since 1997, teaching courses nationally to other lawyers on how to defend outdoor ranges. Whether representing businesses or individuals in litigation or working with commerical establishments to acquire, sell, or build and permit new facilities, my approach is professional, creative, tenacious and unrelenting in pursuing my clients' objectives and achieving their goals.

Skilled and Proficient
Martha’s in-depth knowledge of environmental law and issues and her skills as a litigator saved our organization on several fronts. In conflicts with municipal and State agencies over environmental pollution claims, she was adroit in developing defenses that resolved those issues as well as forestall...

Martha helped save our gun club.
I am one of the officers of the Metacon Gun Club in Simsbury, CT. Several years ago the club was subjected to an intense attack by some of our neighbors who used every avenue possible to shut us down, including lawsuits at both the state and federal level on environmental grounds. The club retained...

An expert in her field
We are owners of two properties that were once used as gas stations; we never owned or operated the stations. Both properties have/had environmental issues relative to the past uses. Martha Dean assisted us as we navigated the issues regarding our rights as innocent parties and our responsibilities ...

I purchased a mini plaza with a gas station without knowing all the ins and outs of owning a potentially very expensive liability. I did my "due diligent'" of a stage I environmental studies of the property and thought that was all. After meeting with an acquaintance, who is an owner of the local...
