Courtney E. Butler

I graduated from the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law, first in my class. While in law school, I was the president of the Spanish Speaking Lawyers Association, and I interned with a private local immigration law firm, the Denver Immigration Court, a corporate law firm in Caracas, Venezuela, and the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network, where I continue to volunteer as a pro bono attorney.  I also received the Scholastic Excellence Award for the highest grade in Trial Practice, Legal Writing, Land Use Planning, and Property.

After law school, I clerked for the Colorado Court of Appeals and the Vermont Environmental Court. I then spent two years working for Monaghan Safar PLLC before returning to Colorado, my native state, in 2014. While in Vermont, I practiced environmental, land use, and municipal law, and I provided volunteer legal assistance to several immigrant and refugee nonprofit organizations.  Between 2014 and 2025, I practiced exclusively immigration law.  In September 2025, I decided to broaden my practice, and I re-joined Monaghan Safar PLLC.  I work fully remotely from Colorado.

I am an active member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), both nationally and in the Colorado Chapter.  I hold various positions of leadership in AILA both nationally and locally.  I am also a member of the Vermont Bar Association and the Chittenden County Bar Association.  I regularly speak at AILA conferences and events.  I am also a past chair and current member of the Spanish Speaking Lawyers Committee of the Colorado Bar Association. I have represented clients before the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), the Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals, the District Court of Colorado, the Colorado Court of Appeals, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Vermont Superior Courts, the Vermont Environmental Court, and the District Court of Vermont.  

I have lived in Argentina, Ecuador, and Venezuela, and I am fluent in Spanish. In my free time, I enjoy spending time outside with my family, including my partner and three young kids.  I also enjoy international travel, long distance running, ultimate Frisbee, camping, hiking, snowboarding, and photography, and I am attempting to learn Russian.
