In January 2020 my deeply troubled daughter obtained a Protection from Harassment (PFH) order against me in Portland to stop all contact between me and her two children, with whom I had a wonderful relationship.  4 months later in May, at the height of Covid 19, I sent a birthday card and herbal tea ...to my granddaughter and 4 months after that my daughter insisted I be charged with a crime for that. After nearly 2 more years the district attorney’s office finally agreed to a deferred disposition agreement that would leave me free from a criminal record. However, this made my daughter, the so called victim of my birthday gift crime, more irate and she argued that I must have a criminal label and should be incarcerated (I have a full lifetime free of violence or criminal history). But my daughter's unfounded claims, with constant court / DA encouragement that she was a victim of everything, escalated even further beyond the absurd. The DA’s office wrote to "pull the proposal" and went on to demand I be deemed a criminal and be incarcerated.  At that point I contacted Attorney John Simpson. He patiently listened to the history and facts. John’s mind is razor sharp and he quickly understood the essence of what happened. His deep understanding of the Maine criminal courts and the politics of the DA’s office was exactly what I needed. Attorney Simpson had experience working with each of the three judges and four assistant district attorneys that ended up being involved my case. Attorney Simpson cut through things and explained that the DA could not renege on an agreement by trying to miscast it as a withdrawal of an offer. To make a long story short, he helped me draft a motion that forced the DA to reinstate the substance of the deal we had made. The Judge would not credit the lost time, but the vicious absurd criminal charges will be dismissed and I will have no permanent criminal record. I have worked with many attorneys. None are better than John, who combines the fast and sure battle instincts of an experienced, no-nonsense criminal defense attorney with civility, patience and political savvy.  John Simpson has very high personal integrity and is one of the finest human beings I have had the privilege of knowing.
