Biography
John C. Mooney is an attorney from Hingham, Massachusetts. He has served as an Assistant District Attorney since 2017.
Prior to beginning his legal career, Mr. Mooney served as a field artillery officer in the United States Army; he is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07. In support of his fellow veterans, Mr. Mooney filed an amicus curiae brief joined by the Disabled American Veterans Department of Massachusetts. See Commonwealth v. Morgan, 476 Mass. 768, 73 N.E.3d 762 (2017). In its opinion, the Supreme Judicial Court highlighted the heavy burden placed on servicemembers during the protracted American military engagements in Afghanistan and Iraq. The decision ensured that veterans and active duty members of the military were provided the same benefits of pretrial diversion programs already afforded by statute to young adults in Massachusetts. Mr. Mooney's support of combat veterans seeking pre-trial diversion and substance abuse treatment has been chronicled by National Public Radio and The Boston Globe.
