William Neil Friedler

Bill Friedler is a Trusts and Estates Attorney and Counsel with the Private Clients and Fiduciary Services Group of Verrill Dana LLP in Boston.  Prior to joining Verrill Dana LLP,  Bill was a Shareholder in the Firm of Ruberto, Israel & Weiner P.C in Boston. Bill had previously served as a Partner and Chair of the Trust & Estate Planning Group at Conn Kavanaugh, Rosenthal, Peisch & Ford LLP in Boston. Prior to that Bill served as the founder and Managing Partner of The Friedler Law Group for 25 years, a boutique law firm specializing in Trusts and Estates law. 

Bill has been chosen by his peers and Boston Magazine from 2009-2019  to be designated as a Massachusetts “Super Lawyer” in the field of Estate Planning. Bill has also been selected to be included every year since 2015 in "Best Lawyers In America", recognizing him for his knowledge of Elder Law.

With many years of experience in the practice of estate planning, probate administration, and Medicaid planning, Bill Friedler is held in the highest regard by his peers and clients alike and is a specialist in the highly sophisticated and ever changing field of estate tax law.

Since his admission to the Massachusetts Bar in 1981, Bill has concentrated his practice in the areas of complex estate planning, probate and trust administration, planning for adults or children with special needs and disabilities, elder law and Medicaid planning. Within the context of estate planning, Bill represents his clients for their corporate and real estate needs and is knowledgeable about business succession planning. 

Throughout his career, Bill has authored many estate planning articles and has appeared on radio and television to address tax and estate planning matters.  He is frequently called upon to speak on these subjects to members of the bar, private industry and the general public. He authored “MedicaidPlanning Update”, published by the Massachusetts Bar Association (1998), and is a contributing author to “Practical Estate Planning in Massachusetts”, a book published by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc. (2003-2024).

Bill served as President of Temple Beth Avodah in Newton, MA (2009-2011). He has also served as an Endowment Trustee for the Temple and has served as a member of the Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees.

Bill also served from 1995 to 1996 and from 1997 to 1998 as Chairperson of the Massachusetts Bar Association Taxation Section. Bill also acted as Co-chairperson of the Massachusetts Bar Association Estate Planning Subcommittee from 1989 until 1995.

Bill was a member of  the Executive Management Board and the Budget and Finance Committee of the Association, (1999- 2002). From 2001-2002, he served  as Chairperson of the Investment Sub-Committee of the Budget and Finance Committee which was responsible for selecting and overseeing an investment advisor for the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Massachusetts Bar Foundation. From 1997 to 2004 he served as a Delegate to the Massachusetts Bar Association House of Delegates, the legislative and policy making body of the Massachusetts Bar Association

From 1986 to 1989 Bill was as an adjunct faculty member of the Graduate Tax Program of Boston University School of Law.
