Carlos Javier Sagardía-Abreu

Carlos J. Sagardía-Abreu is a trial attorney with significant experience in civil and criminal litigation. Mr. Sagardía was an Editor for the UPR Law Review and graduated at the top of his class. He obtained a 98.2% percentile in Puerto Rico's Bar Exam. After law school, Mr. Sagardía worked for various top tier full service law firms in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Mr. Sagardía has substantial experience in civil and commercial litigation, including general torts, contractual disputes, collection of monies, foreclosures, administrative law, and construction law. Mr. Sagardía has also handled constitutional law matters, including electoral disputes, first amendment litigation, defamation, privacy in the workplace matters and legislative advising. Mr. Sagardía also has substantial experience in injunction and mandamus proceedings.

Additionally, Mr. Sagardía has experience in the trade regulation area, specifically, defending corporate clients against antitrust, unfair competition and Law 75 claims. During 2011, while an Associate at O'Neill & Borges, Mr. Sagardía successfully represented Esso Standard Oil, Co., in a multimillion dollar antitrust litigation before the Puerto Rico Supreme Court, obtaining a 6-1 Opinion establishing a precedent under Puerto Rico's antitrust and gasoline laws.

Further, Mr. Sagardía has substantial experience in the labor and employment law arena. He has defended governmental and private employers in a myriad judicial and administrative claims. Currently, Mr. Sagardía advises a higher learning institution in all employment law related matters. He also provides preemptive and litigation advice to employees who have been subject of adverse employment actions, including termination, retaliation and discrimination.

Mr. Sagardía also handles state and federal criminal law matters, including but not limited to white collar crime, conspiracy charges, narcotics violations and violent crimes, among others.
