Scottsdale has a fascinating history, beginning around 800 C.E. when the Hohokam Indians settled the area. Following their mysterious disappearance about 500 years ago, the next major settlement began with the 1888 arrival of US Army Chaplain Winfield Scott, who purchased land in the area and started a farm.

Utilizing some of the canals originally built by the Hohokam, the settlement proved successful. Thanks to Scott's prominent role in the city's founding, it would eventually be named Scottsdale in his honor.
