Computer Parts Tarrif Proceeding: GATT Uruguay Round

Michael A Aisenberg

Case Conclusion Date: November 6, 1996

Practice Area: Antitrust / Trade Law

Outcome: Eliminated $1.3 B annual parts tarrifs against DEC

Description: U.S. chip manufacturers sought agreement by EU industry to elimination of tariffs on U.S. computer parts going into Europe. EU companies opposed, based on injury potential to their competitive position, which was aided by high cost of U.S. goods. U.S. industry enrolled US Government (USTR) as advocate and over 3 years, succeeded in persuading EU staff and EU member states that maintainance of high tariff was imposing unnecessary costs on European computer customers.
