Before this year, I have never needed to hire a lawyer for anything in my life. When I got a DUI, I had no idea what to do. My parents' friend who has been a lawyer for 20+ years told them about the very best law firm he knew about that deals with DUI's, and Mr. Rands was the lawyer that I was recommended by the firm. Mr. Rands was everything I could've hoped for in a lawyer - he was excellent at keeping me informed, especially since this was my first time having to deal with something like this. I felt really comfortable with him - he was really personable and was very easy to contact if I had any questions or concerns. I had previously heard that DUI cases could take up to a year or more before the process is out of the courts and over, and Mr. Rands - understanding that I wanted it over with as soon as possible - helped me get through everything in just 4 months. He was very clear and specific when it came to things I needed to do that were my resonsibility (alcohol class by a certain date, witness letters, etc) and also made everything clear to me that he planned to do on his own. I feel so lucky to have gotten a lawyer that made my entire experience as painless as possible.

As the firm that Mr. Rands works for is well-known and highly-reputable, I contacted them within a few days of being arrested for DUI. In a meeting with one of the firm’s partners, it was recommended that I retain Mr. Rands to represent my case as he was not only considered to be one of the state’s best DUI defense lawyers (as well as one of the firm’s best), but his office was nearer to my home than is the firm’s main office, which would help to simplify things for me in an already very emotionally difficult situation. I was assured that I would be impressed with Mr. Rands’ and that I would be pleased to have his representation. . . was I ever! I actually researched Mr. Rands’ reputation and performance, reading reviews right here on Avvo before calling. Reading comments from those whose cases had been successfully resolved with Mr. Rands’ counsel convinced me that he was the one I needed to represent me. I was not in a financial position to pay what I thought would be necessary to hire the best – I was wrong. While I did have to finance my legal fees – something I simply consider to be a necessary means to an end and certainly better than having no representation at all – Mr. Rands was well worth the money. In fact, he ended up saving me not only additional, unnecessary expenses, but he pretty much saved my life.

As a parent of Mr. Rands client, it was very difficult to take a hands-off approach and leave all the decision making to the two of them. Mr. Rands was very careful to not breach the client-attorney privacy, and jeopardize any part of the case, while still tactful enough to make my wife and I feel comfortable with the process.
We were hesitant at first, but in sitting back and watching him in the courtroom, we were very glad we were being represented by him and his firm. His professionalism and understanding of the law was clearly evident from the beginning. Mr. Rands took all the time we needed to make comfortable decisions and explained them in detail, in a way that we all understood what was happening or had a potential to happen. He shared his plan with us and followed it, only making changes upon consulting our daughter first. While it was an experience we all wished would end in a hurry, we feel that his patience and expertise payed positive dividends, in the long run. Before being referred to Jonathan Rands, I was charged with a third DUI within seven years. I was facing jail time, loss of license(for a long time), a revoked deferred prosecution from a previous DUI, possible job loss, fines, and other penalties. With Jonathans legal expertise, his flawless strategy, and his private investigators testimony, he was able to get my DUI charge reduced to negligent driving. He also kept my deferred prosecution from being revoked, I served no jail time, and I kept my license. A lawyer that i had previous to Mr. Rands suggested that I go and talk with him because he was the best there was at DUI defense. That is 100% true. My experience with Mr. Jonathan Rands and his assistant Lynn Rose was superb. He is truly "THE BEST" at what he does.

Jonathan D. Rands is a superb DUI Lawyer. Before contacting him to represent me in my DUI case I heard nothing but great things about Mr. Rands. Other lawyers were requesting that I contact him due to the amount of experience he has. He professionalizes in DUI cases and dissects your case down bit by bit. He takes his time and wants the best end result for his clients that he can get. Having my first DUI case, it was a long process and at times very nerve racking because I wanted to know what I needed to do to move on from this horrible experience. Mr. Rands taught me that it takes time and patience and I was well happy with the end result of my case. He told me what I should have been doing before my court dates unlik a previous lawyer that did not bring to my attention as to what I should have been doing. (Ex. Mr Rands reviewed my case w/myself and husband and within almost seconds found many loopholes due to poor handling of our car accident and my DUI. He found the witness that called in the accident and the witness said I wasn't the driver. The police had completely mishandled the whole situation and Mr. Rands found it and now my record is clean like it should be.

Whatcom County citizens are fortunate to have an attorney of such caliber as Jonathan Rands working with the best law firm in the state supporting him. Jonathan is young, smart, and dedicated to his client’s. Ordinarily, the average citizen will not find himself/herself in trouble with the law, but as a result of the DUI enforcement in our area, many otherwise law abiding individuals, are be charged with DUI. Jonathan has the ability to get the charges reduced or dismissed because of his experience, dedication, and vast DUI knowledge. His genuine concern for his clients and their future shows because he calls you back- right away and in the months following your arrest he continues to fight for your rights in a system that has forgotten the rules. My case was difficult; I hired two other attorneys before I found Jonathan. I was facing a year in jail and my other attorneys were willing to accept that. Jonathan did not. He stood by me and made sure the rule of law was followed. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your situation, you need to hire Jonathan. Mr Rands was recommended to us because my son attends University of British Columbia on a student visa. The DUI he received this summer (08) put his visa in jeopardy. Mr Rands was everything you would want him to be: Concerned, careful, thoughtful, knowledgeable, reliable, responsive and competent. His assistant, Lynn, was just as competent and responsive.
The DUI was a crisis for our family and having Mr. Rands in charge helped soften the pain. He was there to answer questions and worked carefully for a solution that would give my son the best chance at re-entering Canada. He was always mindful of my son's college schedule and commitment to studies. In the end he was successful in attaining a settlement that allowed my son to return to school on time. I harbored no illusions concerning my situation when after an accident last spring I was charged with DUI. I had been down this road before as well as some other legal issues which I knew would complicate things.
Jonathan was recommended by an attorney friend of mine and I was fortunate enough to be listening. I called Lynn Rose his legal assistant and Jon's representation of me began in earnest. I made a very poor decision one night and was arrested for DWI and reckless driving. The next day I spent two days on the Internet researching local attorneys and attorneys in Seattle. Jonathan was at the top of the list due to his reviews and extensive experience in the field. I met with Jonathan and he gave me the best and worst case scenarios and proposed a plan of action. In my situation I found two areas that both Jonathan and Ms. Rose could not do better: helping me along psychologically dealing with the legal issues and handling the case.
I am quite satisfied with the outcome of the case and Jonathan and his assistant Ms. Rose were with me every step. He scrutinized every detail of the case including the BAC test, police report, my testimony, field sobriety test, etc. Jonathan always made time for my many questions and concerns in person, email and on the phone. He was with me every step of the way. If you are in the unfortunate situation of getting an MIP, DWI or DUI I give Jonathan I strongly recommend that you at least meet with him to discuss your case. I retained Jonathan Rands in a rather complex, not your average, DUI case. My case dealt with a DUI charge in which I could not blow on the datamaster machine because of my asthma, and my arthritis and other medical conditions prevented me from performing the field sobriety tests. The arresting officer was not very nice, and, among other things he did and did not do, he refused to provide me a blood test when I asked him. The officer alleged I attempted to blow on the datamaster only once, adn for only 1/2 a second, and charged me with DUI; what a jerk!!!! Anyway, Jonathan obtained computer records indicating I actually attempted to blow on the Datamaster twice, retained an expert regarding my asthma and my other medical conditions, and a State Patrol ATrooper to testify about the datamaster records indicating I atttempted to blow twice,a nd not once as the officer alleged. We went to trial and Jonathan was like a screen writer, director, and actor all wrapped up into one; he destroyed the officer on the stand, without being rude of course, and the jury seemed really interested when Jonathan spoke and conducted my defense. The jury went out to deliberate at the close of trial, and came back almost immediately with a finding of "NOT GUILTY;" Whoo Hoo, I was a free man witrhout a DUI conviction. Oh, did I mention, Jonathan also represented me in my Department of Licensing driver license suspension appeal, which hearings are separate from the criminal trial, and guess what, yep, he prevailed in that as well and the Department of Licensing suspension was thrown out by the court. I cannot stress what it means, if you get charged with DUI, to retain an attorney of Jonathan's caliber and experience, and I highly recommend Jonathan for any DUI charge and for license suspension cases. His pleasant demeanor, legal knowledge, expertise, and creativeness are truly refreshing in a field where so many lawyers are, well, I'll just leave it at that. When I was pulled over and arrested for DUI I didn't know where to go. A lawyer I found in Seattle recommended I work with Jonathan Rands since he was local to me. Prior to even meeting me in person he showed up to court with me the Monday following my arrest. Having him there made me feel much more comfortable as I was extremely scared as this was my first time in a courtroom.
Jonathan kept me informed through the entire several month process. What I am most happy about is that he soothed my nerves as I was very nervous and scared. It was a nice thought to know he was busy working on my case while I could continue living my normal life. Jonathan successfully won my DOL hearing and I only lost my license for 30 days. He also got my 2nd level DUI reduced down to reckless driving, which I will be forever grateful. I was stopped for DUI back in October of 2007. Those who have been through this, know how difficult a period this is in one's life. Through a friend's referral, I contacted Jonathan Rands. The best decision I could have made.
Mr. Rands quickly gathered the facts and built my case for both the criminal and DOL proceedings. I was involved every step of the way. I was amazed at how many times during both cases that Mr. Rands experience was able to keep things in my favor. Despite what you may think prior to going through a DUI defense, the judicial system is not built around protecting the innocent. It is built around winning cases and driving revenue to the state. Let me just say that this was a real eye opener for me, and I am very grateful that Mr. Rands was my attorney. Needless to say, I won my case. I even kept my license. My first and hopefully only DUI started with a single motorcycle accident and a weeks stay in the hospital. During my 6 week recovery and no ticket issued I began to call attorneys to find out what's up. Being a licensed Merchant Marine Officer it was first and foremost in my mind to find someone to keep my profession intact. After 3 phone calls I was refered to Mr. Jonathan Rands at Fox,Bowman,Duarte. I know at least 100 hilariously derogative jokes about Lawyers. You know the one about? Well, I confess that Jonathan Rands proved them all wrong, although I’ve never even met him in person. On this web site is the first time that I’ve ever seen his likeness. That’s because for the last two years I’ve been working on a senior Foreign Service assignment for the US Govt. in Israel — so, believe me, you cannot even imagine how badly the record of a Washington State DUI conviction in my Confidential HR file would have wrecked my family’s life right now and forever in the hereafter!
Jonathan was referred to me by my family’s attorney in Seattle whose professional field is different. Jonathan called me at home in Jerusalem from Bellingham on Thursday 28th June, 2007 and he counseled me at length over the phone. Without any alternative actions available to save ourselves, and expecting to be gobbled up by the sharks for the privilege, my WWU-graduate daughter and I agreed instantly to follow Jonathan’s counsel in precise detail: relax, enjoy our Fourth of July celebrations as planned — and Jonathan himself would take care of everything. He then called us or E-mailed us every couple of days for about ten days thereafter and he was absolutely true to his word, excelling both our considerations concerning the original cause of our sensitive legal predicament as well as our hopeful imaginings about the likely outcomes of Whatcom County District Court’s slated case — which was settled satisfactorily before the Judge in September. What Jonathan did, and how he did it, was absolutely professional, legal, transparent, ethical and sheer genius. My entire family is humbly grateful to have benefited so greatly as a result of Jonathan’s expertise plus the clear respect with which he is upheld by the State’s Judiciary. Jonathan Rands is the epitome of how legal council should handle a client's defense. In this case, mine.
His knowledge of the legal ramifications surrounding a DUI case is simply immense, as is his knowledge of the responsibilities of the police, the arrest, and the field tests. I have enjoyed his ability to dissect the prosecution’s case piece by piece. If the authorities made a mistake, Jonathan will find it. He brought in external help who during his testimony created trouble for the prosecution and made them look like incompetent. The trooper involved in my case had his hat handed to him on the stand by Jonathan and his associate. Hopefully in the end, Jonathan will simply make too much work for the system, and the system will give up. He has stayed in contact with me during this entire process and I have no doubt I have received the best legal defense money could have bought. I have talked with many people during this process that have had similar cases and none have had the experience that I have had. In fact, most have had really terrible ones. (The first lawyer I contacted said "he would take the case, but he would just be taking my money" - needless to say, I moved on and kept looking) Jonathan has been relentless in pursuit of finding ways to make the prosecution work - which they will gladly avoid at the expense of your rights. What should have been a slam dunk case for the prosecution has turned into a nightmare for them. And although the case is not yet closed, I have already received work in excess of what I have paid for. Jonathan has been nothing short of amazing during my case.
