Mr. Rands was the second attorney I hired on this same DUI and I regret not going to Jonathan Rands FIRST. I was arrested on Mar 10 hired the wrong attorney on Mar 16 then fired him Nov 6 and hired Mr. Rands on Nov 7. - After refusing the street offer, I did a Breathalyzer in jail, and blew a 0.051 where I was booked DUI. I have been on pre-trial probation for 9 months because my first attorney was not respectful of the facts, just my money. Mr. Rands was hired Nov 7 and my DUI was dismissed Jan 26. Extraordinary results, despite working through the holidays with a very old case. Jonathan Rands listens, explains the options available, asks for your guidance, clarifies what you want, explains the ramifications, confirms your directions and then goes forth!!!! I received a personal phone call with each progression of my case. If I missed the call and called back while he was leaving a message for me, he took my call immediately. I worked with more than one lawyer on my case. I was uncomfortable with the level of knowledge and the personal attention I received until I worked with Jonathan. It is critical to note that he is also an expert in various health issues such as Diabetes and Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). You will not be able to find this attention to detail from another lawyer. His understanding of all aspects in these cases makes him a true specialist. The facts of my case were ignored by multiple lawyers that were paid to defend me. Jonathan did not settle for an easy paycheck. He worked to make certain that the result was fair and reasonable. I deal with lawyers frequently in my job. I believe this might be the first time I felt like I underpaid and the lawyer over-delivered.

I would give Mr. Rands my highest recommendation. Do not consider going forward in your case without at least speaking to him. I was in really deep trouble over "just" driving fast. DUI, evasion,
Jonathan really knows local DA office and what he can and cannot accomplish. He is a straight shooter and on my side.
Evasion got tossed. DUI reduced. (Whatcom cops have no appreciation for "no speed limit" Montana drivers.)
Jail time went to home detention.
Got caught driving while my license was Revoked for "no Blow".
Jonathan really stuck with this one PROBATION VIOLATION. Instead of a year suspended on my license and the Judge jumping all over me, got off with another home "vacation" and I kept my license.

After my father picked me up from jail and reminded me that I was the dumbest kid he had and that I was clearly a "mental midget" he handed me a piece of paper with a few lawyers' names scribbled on it and said "You figure it out, because when you aren't happy with the results, I don't want it to be my fault". Needless to say, I am elated with the results. I met with Jonathan first but proceeded to have consultations with a couple more lawyers. I found that any strengths that the other lawyers possessed, Jonathan's skill set matched and then exceeded theirs. The private investigator he works with is also very knowledgeable on DUI matters and proved to be helpful and friendly as well. I was arrested March 29, 2011 and was completely done with both the criminal and the DOL cases by July 2nd, 2011. After hearing stories from friends that their DUI took 8 months or more than a year to resolve, I am extremely pleased with how quickly Jonathan handled my matter. Not only did he manage to get my DUI dropped to Negligent Driving in the 1st Degree with no probation, but I also will not have my license suspended at any point. When comparing stories with my previously mentioned friends, I learned that I fared much better than them by choosing the most excellent lawyer in the area. His assistants Sandy and Carrie are lovely ladies as well. I felt that I could call with any questions, and the office is the type of environment where I could bring in my dog while paying my bill. I hired Jonathan to defend me in a recent DUI case. His knowledge in this field is tremendous. He not only had my DUI conviction reduced to Negligent Driving, but also prevented my license from being suspended from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Both of these were huge, as I now do not have a DUI on my record and never have to say my license was suspended. If I were a prosecuting attorney, I would have nightmares of Jonathan Rands. He has a gift and is fully utilizing that talent as an amazing DUI defense attorney. This was my first experience in the justice system and it was unsettling at best. Mr. Rands was reassuring and knowledgeable as he explained the procedure I was facing. He asked pertinent questions and, after hearing my side, laid out the possible outcomes of my case. He didn't make pie-in-the-sky promises but offered a realistic assessment of what he could and likely could not do. Our agreed upon best outcome was that I would not lose my license, would not be forced to have a vehicle interlock installed on my car, and would not have a DUI on my record. I made a huge mistake when I drove 90 miles an hour after drinking. I made the mistake worse when I refused to blow in the machine. However, I made a good choice when I hired Mr. Rands. I received a Minor DUI while i was on a short vacation, i was not familiar with the area and my legal options, i was lucky referred to Jonathan. He was very professional and prompt. As a Canadian resident with a Washington State DUI, I was in need of legal counsel who was familiar with both countries legal system, especially in regards to jail time, license suspensions, fines and the reciprocal agreements between Canada and the United States. I found Jonathan to be extremely knowledgeable on all these accounts. In the fall of 2009, I was on my way home when I got pulled over, arrested, and left to deal with a dreaded DUI. As any would imagine, this was a fairly stressful event, but as soon as I picked up the phone and called around trying to find a good attorney, I some how luckily fell into the hands of Jonathon Rands.
On our first meeting, Jonathon cleared up all of my questions about what could and was likely to happen to me during this journey. He was very clear about what I had to do and when I had to do it to make the best out of something horrible, as well as letting me know the process of how he would work to lower the charge and punishment of the ordeal. This greatly relieved my stress and made the whole process easy to walk through.
In the end, Jonathon dropped my DUI down to a Reckless Driving charge (which I never would have though possible); delivering everything he promised on the first meeting and more. Johnathan was very helpful and approachable as I didn't know what was going to be happening throughout the stages of the DUI Process. He helped explain all of the options available and formulated a game plan. He is very educated in what he does and knows the local judges and prosecuting attorneys. This is important because most other lawyers I looked into were not local, or did not specialize in DUI. After recently being charged with a dui, I was once again in need of a good attorney. After having gone through this process twice before, I was not particularly happy with the performance of my previous attorneys. My current charge was not as cut and dry as my previous charges appeared to be. I sounded like a fool in a few conversations with him, but he's not there to add any more to your burden. He's an excellent listener and having him on my side was not just a legal asset. I am a professor emeritus of physical chemistry with 170 + publications in the refereed literature; and, was shocked at what I learned about breath tests after my wife was arrested for DUI! We law abiding citizens wish so hard for certainty we use laws to make it so – when it isn’t.

I was with my wife all day when she was arrested and charged for DUI. We had driven from Bellingham to Seattle for a concert at Jazz alley. We each had a before dinner drink and shared a bottle of wine during our meal ending at 7:30 pm. We enjoyed the show and she drove home at my request. We had consumed exactly the same amount of alcohol and our BMI (Body Mass Index) was practically identical. She left at 9 pm, was stopped about 10 pm for a mechanical infraction (missing light) -- during the “drive nailed – get hammered campaign”. The officer handled the missing light issue as did she. He swiftly transitioned to a series of accusations disguised as questions: Why did you take so long to stop? (It was 20 seconds according to later testimony). Why didn’t you pull further off the road? (I judged the car position to be safe). Why are you taking so long to answer? Have you been drinking this evening? Just like in the commercial (excuse me, public safety message).

We had both been on a low carbohydrate diet for about 3 weeks. We were both in ketosis: she strong; I mild. The officer claimed he smelled alcohol in the car. Ketosis breath has often been mistaken for the odor of alcohol. As he went into the DUI routine, her eyes glazed over and she assumed a deer-in-the-headlights” appearance. She went into shock. The officer reported her as falling down drunk (she never did fall down or stumble). Surprise: in the roadside portable breath tests: she tested 0.14 and I tested 0.4!

We hired a specialist who testified (DOL hearing) that due to her rapid weight loss (documented by medical records), her body was converting excess acetone to isopropyl alcohol (misread as ethyl alcohol in breath testing). The prosecutor decided that since we could counter quantitative“data that she would prosecute with only the qualitative – the officers written report. It was written post breath analysis and corresponded exactly to clinical published descriptions of persons intoxicated at 0.14 – but was nowhere near what I observed in my wife. The prosecutor neither had the authority nor the will to offer any plea unrelated to intoxication; her only interest: a guilty conviction for DUI (justice? – give me a break). Had she admitted

I retained Jonathan Rands in a rather complex, not your average, DUI case. My case dealt with a DUI charge in which I could not blow on the datamaster machine because of my asthma, and my arthritis and other medical conditions prevented me from performing the field sobriety tests. The arresting officer was not very nice, and, among other things he did and did not do, he refused to provide me a blood test when I asked him. The officer alleged I attempted to blow on the datamaster only once, adn for only 1/2 a second, and charged me with DUI; what a jerk!!!! Anyway, Jonathan obtained computer records indicating I actually attempted to blow on the Datamaster twice, retained an expert regarding my asthma and my other medical conditions, and a State Patrol ATrooper to testify about the datamaster records indicating I atttempted to blow twice,a nd not once as the officer alleged. We went to trial and Jonathan was like a screen writer, director, and actor all wrapped up into one; he destroyed the officer on the stand, without being rude of course, and the jury seemed really interested when Jonathan spoke and conducted my defense. The jury went out to deliberate at the close of trial, and came back almost immediately with a finding of "NOT GUILTY;" Whoo Hoo, I was a free man witrhout a DUI conviction. Oh, did I mention, Jonathan also represented me in my Department of Licensing driver license suspension appeal, which hearings are separate from the criminal trial, and guess what, yep, he prevailed in that as well and the Department of Licensing suspension was thrown out by the court. I cannot stress what it means, if you get charged with DUI, to retain an attorney of Jonathan's caliber and experience, and I highly recommend Jonathan for any DUI charge and for license suspension cases. His pleasant demeanor, legal knowledge, expertise, and creativeness are truly refreshing in a field where so many lawyers are, well, I'll just leave it at that. My first and hopefully only DUI started with a single motorcycle accident and a weeks stay in the hospital. During my 6 week recovery and no ticket issued I began to call attorneys to find out what's up.
