This recently tried case was a prosecution of a woman charged with transporting hundreds of pounds of marijuana. The driver and only occupant of a car, she was stopped at a border inspection station when a dog keyed on her vehicle. The defense was that this woman was set up and duped by a group of professional drug smugglers who attempted to use her to get the drugs through the inspection point. An honest witness, with a good community background, the jury found her credible, and the government "expert" not so credible. The jury deliberated a short time, and came back with a verdict of "Not Guilty" The entire family (and this attorney) breathed a sigh of relief as she was discharged, and released to go home.

$1,000,000.00 mediation settlement
I represented the adult children of a woman killed by a sheriff's deputy who was speeding in his marked police cruiser with lights and siren off in the early hours of the morning. The deceased, driving her car to her son's house, pulled out after stopping at a stop sign onto the road the deputy was driving on. I hired an expert accident reconstructionist who proved the deputy's speed on the curved road was unsafe. We showed that the deceased never could have seen him in time to take evasive action. He drove right into the drivers side of her car, in a T-bone style hit, killing her. Her grandchild was asleep in the front passenger seat. He sustained minor injuries.
After a series of mediation meetings, where we presented a "day in the life" video we created with a videographer I hired, showing how she was loved by her family and community, and the incredible impact her death had upon her grown children, the case settled for One Million Dollars.
Interestingly, even though County Counsel saw the deputy's liability as so clear they paid that sum, the D.A. refused to file criminal charges against the deputy for vehicular manslaughter He didn't even get a traffic ticket for speeding.
