I agree with the other comments by my colleagues. California is an "at will" state and absent an employment contract or collective barging agreement, the employer is free to discharge the employe without cause. However, the employer may not discriminate or otherwise violate existing employment laws, as discussed in the other answers. I generally advise clients that if the employer is engaged in the type of behavior you described, you are probably better off finding alternative employment...
