I have had many clients who received similar letters. It has nothing to do with your criminal case. It is merely an attempt by the store to extort money from you. What I have done for my clients in the past is to write the store a letter and inform them that the client is presumed innocent, and has no intention of paying anything. The important question is whether you had a written employment contract with the attorney. That should have spelled out what the attorney was going to do for you and how much it will cost. Whether you can get any money back is not known, but, if the lawyer contracted to perform legal services and did not perform the services, there may be an ethical violation for which you could complain to the State Bar.
