  • Can you be charged for escape if you walked off from a work release assignment from a correctional center?

My friend walked away from a WI correctional center (minimum security) and than turned himself in about 7 months later. Can they charge him with escape or would it be a lessor charge of walkaway?

As already stated, it is a Class H felony in WI to walk away from a Correctional Institution. A person can be charged for not returning to the institution after release for work, education, etc. There is no lesser charge though the circumstances of the escape will dictate the penalty.
