Case Conclusion Date: June 21, 1981
Practice Area: Civil Rights
Outcome: Plaintiffs won in trial court and on appeal
Description: Juvenile status offenders were subjected to criminal attack by older, criminal defendant juveniles in detention center. Habeas Corpus petition was brought against director of center and HRS. Petition was granted, although HRS was never served and therefore not subject to court's jurisdiction. As a result a new detention center was constructed in Gainesville, and classification procedures instituted so that runaways and truants were not housed with rapists and robbers and subject to attack. Attorney Jack J. Fine handled the case in trial court and successfully completed the appeal.
