About Me

Counts Law Group has a passion for the First Amendment and for protecting those who feel their Constitutional rights have been violated.

I graduated from UNC at Chapel Hill and the UGA School of Law, then began my career working at two of the Southeast's most prestigious law firms, Alston & Bird and Dowe Lohnes. In 2000, I struck out on my own and established Counts Law Group.

Counts Law Group is a unique law firm where we are not only dedicated to giving quality work and superior client service, but also are passionate about our clients and legal issues facing them.  I regularly represent large media companies, publishers and individuals in matters including libel, privacy and copyright infringement. I have compiled a formidable record of trial and appellate successes, and have become most sought after for my expertise in resolving complex legal matters expeditiously, minimizing cost and court time.  I also offer consultations on legal issues and conducts pre-publication reviews.

Practicing for more than 22 years, I have built a formidable record of trial and appellate wins. Most recently, I have:

  •  Overturned a law denying the terminally ill the right even to talk about assisted suicide.

  • Changed Georgia rules that arbitrarily prohibited individuals from having phrases such as ‘GAYPWR’ on a license plate.

  • Secured a $545,000 judgment and a dismissal for a woman in a civic club victimized in a frivolous libel suit by a fellow club member.

  • Successfully pioneered application of Georgia Anti-SLAPP statute for media defendants reporting on government investigations. Using various pre-trial defenses and application of anti-SLAPP arguments,  including that statute’s mandates of attorney’s fees and sanctions for frivolous litigation, my firm has obtained 9 dismissals of defamation and privacy lawsuits for insurance and media clients over seven years (most voluntary and with prejudice), avoiding any settlements and minimizing litigation costs for clients

I also teach media law at Emory University, and spend my free time waterskiing and boating with my husband, Joe, and keeping up with my dogs, Cooper and Trouble.
