He is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in North Carolina and handles complex tort cases involving major injuries from automobile, tractor-trailer, bicycle and construction accidents. He also assists people who have been injured as a result of defective products and drugs and mistreated by insurance companies. In recent cases, Vance has obtained significant settlements that established trust funds to provide lifetime care for children and adults with permanent injuries.
Vance was named a North Carolina Super Lawyer in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 by the publication Super Lawyers. He was also selected for membership in the American Trial Lawyers Association, which limits membership to one hundred lawyers in each state.
Vance earned his law degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973, where he was editor-in-chief of the North Carolina Law Review. He completed his undergraduate study at Chapel Hill as well, receiving a B.A. with honors in history in 1965.
He is very active in organizations dedicated to excellence in the legal profession. His commitment to service began early. After college graduation, he spent two years teaching school in Africa with the Peace Corps in Tanzania from 1965 to 1967. Vance was in the U.S. Navy from 1968 to 1970, and commanded a Swift Boat in the MeKong Delta. The Navy awarded him the Bronze Star for his Vietnam service.
Vance is an active member of the First Presbyterian Church. He has participated in many outreach programs conducted by the church to help less fortunate members of our community. He has served as an elder, as Clerk of the Session, Sunday school teacher, and on numerous church committees.
Perhaps one of his greatest passions has been through his leadership of Boy Scout Troop 203, sponsored by First Presbyterian Church, where Vance has been Scoutmaster since 1996.
He is also a longtime member of the Greensboro Kiwanis Club.
When it comes to “leisure” activities, Vance’s pastimes are not very leisurely. They include trail biking, canoeing, swimming and wilderness backpacking. He has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Rainier, and takes annual backpacking trips to places like Alaska, Arizona, Montana and Wyoming.
