Alton L. Knighton Jr.

Alton L. Knighton, Jr. focuses his diverse legal career on tax-exempt bonds, taxable financings, employee benefits and non-profit organizations.

He has represented Carilion Clinic and affiliated hospitals in more than $1.5 billion of tax-exempt financings and has served as bond counsel, borrower’s counsel, lender’s counsel or trustee’s counsel in bond issues worth more than $3.3 billion for hospitals, colleges and universities, retirement communities, non-profit organizations, roads, schools, water and sewer utilities, governmental facilities, manufacturing and housing.

Al serves as corporate counsel for many charitable organizations, including hospitals, colleges and universities, retirement facilities, cultural entities and social welfare organizations. He also counsels many employers on topics that include ESOPs, 401(k) plans and other qualified plans, deferred compensation plans, health, life insurance, disability and other welfare plans, cafeteria plans, and dealings with the IRS and Department of Labor.

Al has been named in Best Lawyers in America in employee benefits law, project finance law and public finance law.

He is a graduate of the University of Virginia (with high distinction) and the University’s law school.

Al’s knowledge of non-profit law makes him a favorite of various community organizations. He has served as a director and/or officer of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund, Planned Parenthood Health Systems, Inc., Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge, Inc., Lewis-Gale Foundation, Greater Southwest Athletic Association, Planned Parenthood Health Systems Action Fund, Inc., Ferrum College Estate Planning Council, Blue Ridge Action Fund and Phi Beta Kappa Association of the Roanoke Area.
