On short notice, I had some serious problems getting accommodations for a disability issue from a major educational institution. The lack of accommodation would have posed a serious obstacle, or at least a major postponement, to me pursuing certain educational plans. The institution was required by law to provide the accommodation, and appropriate medical documents were provided to them; but for reasons still not 100% clear (apparently, a misreading of the medical documents), they refused to provide accommodation. They were also unhelpful in the extreme in providing a channel of communication.
With about ten days before a crucial deadline, I found Gwen D'Souza through the local bar organization. She picked up the case on the fly, I sent her appropriate documents. She established communication with the educational institution, and with the right powerful parties at the institution. She sent letters, and very importantly, she clearly knew the relevant legal statutes and case law. She played intermediary, and negotiated the necessary accommodations. I did not get quite 100% of what the doctor ordered, but I got more than enough to make it possible for me to pursue my plans in a timely way.
Gwen kept me informed of what was going on. It was important that I provided her with necessary documents, and we did work out some elements of strategy together, so it was a team thing. She did (fortunately) reject one or two of my dumber ideas on how to proceed. Mostly, though, it was totally clear I was not going to get what I needed on my own. Gwen made it happen. I was also pleasantly surprised at how reasonable her bill was.
Gwen is an extremely knowledgeable attorney who has assisted me on several occasions for business and personal matters. Her work ethic, integrity and experience make her a very trustworthy advocate.
