Is it legal for Americans to gamble using online casinos?

In general, gambling is allowed under federal law and each individual state is allowed to prohibit or regulate it. Online gambling is a different kettle of fish, however, and there appears to be some confusion as to whether, and what types of gambling, are legal under federal law.
