Starting this year June 15, 2020 the city is going to furlough one day a week for all employees. I worked for the City in the public works department and I’ve been there for 32 years and I was planning on retiring in October. I contacted the state DRS to see how this was going to affect my retirement.... I found out that this was gonna affect my retirement monthly pay by quite a bit. So I was going to go ahead and retire at the end of June 2020. I did not know it at the time but our guild contacted Spencer to write up a memo on how this was going to affect the guild members. There was a few articles in there but one was on retirement. Spencer wrote in the memo that if you were within five years of retirement per DRS that you should be able to use sickleave annual leave or comp time to make up for that furlough day and you must write a letter stating your intentions that you are eligible to retire within that five years. To my surprise the city agree to this so now I’m back to my original plan on retiring at the end of October and not losing any money that I had planned on getting each month after I retired. So a few days after the city has agreed to this I wrote a letter and to my surprise the HR person told me that they were going to offer this throughout the whole city so if anybody else was ready to retire they won’t lose any money I just want to say thank you to Spencer because it helped me tremendously on my retirement thank you.
