Very Unprofessional and a total jerk

On Christmas Day 2020 I was issued a citation for Hit & Run Personal Injury and issued an Immediate Threat Suspension. He told me it would be $1000 for the Magistrates hearing for the Hit & Run and $1500 for the RMV and BOA license suspension hearings. We couldn't proceed with the suspension hearings... till the Hit & Run was disposed of. So I paid him $1000 just for the Hit & Run Magistrates hearing and told him I'll decide how to proceed when that is disposed of. The courts were closed due to COVID so it took 1 year to get a hearing date. I'd call him every few weeks to see how things were progressing and he wouldn't return my calls. He would call in a few days. This created a lot of stress. I also felt that he was judgmental and with some of his remarks had already ruled me guilty. This put me into a deep depression as I thought I was going to jail because you can go to jail for Hit & Run. I finally got a hearing notice for January 10, 2021. I contacted him to let him know of the hearing date and he told me he wasn't doing anything in January and would postpone the hearing date. I couldn't believe it. We waited a whole year to get a hearing and he was postponing it. How long would it take to get another hearing date? When I asked him why, he said that I was getting too personal. I reminded him that I was his client and I had a right to know why he couldn't attend the hearing. He said he was having hip replacement surgery. I asked him when was the surgery because if it was before the hearing date he could still attend the hearing and take care of it. He told me he had a right to take time off from work and that the surgery was on the 11th the day after my hearing. I informed him that he had a duty to represent his clients and that he was FIRED. I told him I wanted a full refund of my money or I was filing a complaint with the Board of Bar Overseers. He sent me a check FEDEX overnight but it wasn't for the $1000 I paid him but $2500. I called him and he issued a check for the right amount and FEDEXED it overnight. Very incompetent and unprofessional. Doesn't he keep any financial records? He had the audacity to ask me to reconsider and rehire him for my suspension hearings. I got another hearing date in a month with another attorney and the Police decided to drop the complaint with no criminal complaint issued so the Hit & Run is resolved but I still have a license suspension. This whole experience has been mentally draining. I am 66 and this is a hardship. He has good reviews but there are some bad ones. Believe me please do not hire him or this may happen to you. One bad review called him a CROOK. I believe by sending me the wrong refund amount he was trying to pull some kind of scam. How incompetent. He seems to think some people are stupid which they aren't. This man needs to be disbarred and not allowed to practice law anywhere in any state. Very unprofessional and a total jerk with no respect for his clients.

Andrew - I certainly appreciate your frustration caused by the COVID-19 virus. There were extensive delays in every court across the state that impacted thousands of individuals. There was little that we could do as courts were not scheduling hearings. As mentioned in your comment, when you contacted me in January, 2021, I immediately advised you that I had a previously scheduled hip replacement surgery. This was scheduled months in advance of you contacting me with your notification. Understanding that I would be unable to drive and on medication, I properly advised you that we would need a brief continuance. You had every right to decide to move in another direction based on my medical procedure and my office immediately refunded you all your monies at your request. There was no scam, I was not in the office at the time and had someone sent you a check for all of your retainer. All monies were properly accounted for and refunded. We wish you nothing but the best of luck moving forward with your license suspension.

OUI Plea and Hardship License

Matt was proactive in reaching out to me once he took my case. He listened to all of the details of the case and was reassuring. He knew all the ins and outs of my circumstances. He was also readily available via the phone and email. On the day of my court appearance attorney Gilman arrived early... and spoke with the ada about my case. He was reassuring as we waited for the case to be called. During the interaction with the judge he was proactive in providing the judge with positive aspects of my case. The judge ended up adding one charge, but I do not fault attorney Gilman for that. Additionally, Matt was super helpful in getting my hardship license. He walked me through the process, give me guidance on crafting my letter, researched public transportation options and how they would not be viable, and brought me to the RMV in Boston. While at the RMV, he showed me exactly where to go, what forms to fill in, and met with the hearing officer, on my behalf. Attorney Gilman has experience working at the RMV as a hearing officer, and as such he had a lot of connections, and this made the process very smooth. I would recommend him unequivocally and without hesitation.
