Before Rachel and I met, I had received my first DUI when I was only 18 years old. I hired an attorney, went to court, and started serving my sentence. I didn't know much about the process, or how it was going to truly affect my future endeavors. All I knew was that this was bad, and my life would so...on be turned upside down. Here we are six years later and reluctantly I received a second DUI. It was one thing to come back from the first one, but to climb out of the hole I had found myself in with the consequences of a second DUI seemed impossible. Rachel is a lawyer you can count on to fight hard for you. My case was a difficult one to say the least. I had a DUI, refusal and reckless driving. The standard penalty is 3 months for DUI and 7 months for refusal. My case was at the Hackensack court and the judge was showing no signs of letting ...me off the charges. Rachel got my reckless driving dismissed. She also saved me money by bypassing the trial and going straight to the appellate court. This gave me about 6 months more time to prepare myself for possibly losing my license. Last month Rachel fought hard for me in the appeal however the decision was not overturned. Overall I will have to be without my license for 5 ½ months which is much better than the 10 month alternative. After a 2-year court battle over a "right-turn on red" in Manhattan for which the NYPD attempted to criminalize via 2-charges related to DWI and Driving While Impaired, Attorney Rachel Kugel took my case to a jury-trial and won it - receiving a verdict of "not guilty" on both charges. Although I have much respect for law enforcement because they protect us everyday, this case proves that they are not always right and we as citizens have a right to challenge them through the legal process. Mrs. Kugel possibly lost money on my case because she had to appear in court alongside me at least 10 times because this case had been drawn out for 2 years unfortunately. She charged me a flat rate and never asked for anything more. This experience has taught me to reflect on certain things relative to society. One of the more reflective moments was the fact that those who may be indigent and not have the means to hire an attorney to defend them have to settle for whatever punishment is passed down to them. It seems extremely unfair that someone's life could be ruined because the police made a judgment call that was proven to be unsubstantiated by a jury in a court of law.
