Out of State DUI Defense

I hired Jason after I was arrested on a DUI in Utah but lived on the East Coast. I never met him face to face, but every interaction I had with him, whether email or phone call, was professional, purposeful, and informative. Despite the circumstances, he did not give up on the chance that I would be ...able to avoid a conviction related to alcohol and therefore not lose my license. While it took almost ten months from start to finish, Jason worked hard to stay in touch with me and update me every step of the way. He arranged things with the court in such a way that I did not have to fly back out to Salt Lake at all, and we were able to reach a plea deal with the prosecutor that resulted in a lesser, non alcohol related charge. He was worth every dollar and lived up to his name and his reputation.

Disappointed

When I first meet and retained Jason it was because, in his words, he's the best DUI attorney in Utah. He does know DUI law, I will give him that, but he implies he can do things that he can't. I also found he often got details of other cases mixed up with mine and when I would correct him he would... argue rather than check the facts. He is not easy to deal with and doesn't listen well. When I would ask a question he often spent more time chastising me about it rather than answering it. In the end I had to hire another attorney to complete the case. I found many attorneys tought the wins and imply they can do the same for you. What they don't tell you is about the losses. And when I retained him we didn't have much information so there was no way he could have predicted an outcome. At times I felt he was working for the prosecutor and not me. He didn't let me make decisions about the case, he wanted me to just trust him. He charges a flat rate, one of the highest in Utah. There is pressure from him to retain him asap. Then again this was true of other attorneys I talked to. Jason was not a good fit for me. He might be for you but I can't recomend him.

Did not care about me or the law.

I had hired a different lawyer from this firm in hope of getting a evidentury trial, as my first lawyer was not up to par. Jason Schatz took over my case and ignored my every desire. He did not get me a new hearing and only got me a slightly better plea. I know he traded me for someone else..

I will not hire Jason Shatz or his law firm again or refer his legal services to anyone.

Like other reviews have stated, I spoke with several lawyers before meeting with Jason Shatz of Shatz Anderson & Associates. I thought I properly reviewed his listed credentials on-line, his own website, ratings & his listed client reviews from websites such as AVVO. Simply stated, I will regret my... decision to hire Jason & his law firm for the rest of my life. After signing his agreement for legal services contract & paying his representation fee of $6,500.00, I started experiencing problems with his services almost immediately. It was extremely hard to even get Jason or his paralegal assistants to even file GRAMA requests for information or pursue the collection of evidence regarding my case at all. Jason also would not present evidence regarding my case to the judge that directly contradicted the validity of the arresting officers allegations. Any attempt I made to discuss these & other issues with Jason about his law firms services were futile at best & met with nothing short of an attitude. These are just a few of the problems I personally experienced with his services. It is in my personal opinion that your future is best placed in the hands of another law firm. Sincerely, Brandon

Great Lawyer! Great for DUI Cases! He got my case dismissed!

Great lawyer! He got my DUI case dismissed! I got arrested on a 1st time DUI charge just outside of Wendover on the Utah side in May 2008. Crazy circumstance why it all happened, but I ended up being just slightly less than 2x the legal limit. Jason charged me $3500, and got to work right away. ...He subpoenaed all the records from everywhere – video tapes from the officer’s car, breathalyzer maintenance records, you name it. When the driver’s license suspension hearing came up, he fought like crazy to get the officer to trip up on his story, and he invoked all kinds of crazy statues from the Utah law. I ended up getting my driver’s license suspended for 3 months, but there was nothing to be done about that. In fact, Jason is starting a collection fund from his clients to fight/appeal the statues at the Utah Supreme Court, and I would have loved to have contributed but couldn’t afford much more. Anyway, Jason really believes in what he’s doing and loves it. He has had several DUI’s himself, so he’s not a holier-than-thou attorney whatsoever. As for getting the case dismissed, Jason recommended that I take a bunch of DUI courses before the hearing in order to look good. Well, that was a great strategy! He recommended that I take all the courses from: Changes Counseling 7370 Creek Road Sandy, UT 84093-6162 (801) 542-7060 I completed all the courses way ahead of time, which Jason said was very remarkable. He pleaded my case to prosecutor in Toelle, and I ended up getting one year probation – after which, they would completely dismiss the case against me as if nothing happened! Dismissed! That was easy enough to stay out of trouble, so my case was dismissed a year later. The prosecutor said that he had never seen anyone put forth that much effort, so he was extremely lenient because he said that it was clear that it would only be a one time thing and that I was sufficiently remorseful judging by my proactive-ness in taking rehab courses. Jason said that that was the reason why he let me off, and that I should thank myself. Either way, I thank Jason for helping me beat the charges! I was really screwed, there was no way I would have won at trial. Anyway, Jason is good about taking calls, talking to you, explaining things, and returning your calls if he’s in court. I’m not being paid to say any of this, I haven’t seen or talked to Jason in probably a year and a half. He’s a great attorney, and he comes highly recommended by this Utahn. - Casey
