Humble yet dogged

Just before his final conference, my husband reached out to George M. Brown of Lewis & Dickstein looking for better representation. Within five minutes of their first phone conversation, George had researched the charges against my husband, which carried a maximum of 14 years in prison and 25 years a...s a sex offender, and asked more questions about the case than our previous lawyer had in months. We hired him on the spot. George dropped everything to come to Traverse City the following day and represent my husband for his final conference, all the Friday of Memorial weekend. At the recommendation of George, we brought on partner Randy Lewis during the course of the case. The team dynamic with both of them is eloquent, commanding, yet humble. They pressed our small town judge’s “comfort zone” without making him defensive. George especially took notes about the judge’s body language and decisions every time we were in court. George and Randy negotiated a deal that was drastically less than the original charges, and something that was not life ending for my husband. They are not afraid to speak out against the decisions of the court or the actions of the prosecution, and they are not afraid to win!

This guy is simply the best!

I recently learned that the state of Michigan passed a law that allows expungement if a person has up to two misdemeanors on their criminal record. Back in 2000, I had a single case that resulted in two criminal misdemeanors. It was unfortunate and the case was mishandled by the courts from the begin...ning. On some background checks only one record showed and on other background checks both records showed. Because I now serve as a minister in a well-known Christian Church, this was becoming more and more of a problem for me even though I had no criminal record before or after that event back in 2000. Every time I inquired with the courts, and even hired another lawyer that claimed he specialized in expungements, no solid information was ever provided to me and nothing was ever accomplished to help me. Then I hired George Brown with the firm Lewis and Dickstein out of Southfield, Michigan. This may be the best decision I ever made in my life. George immediately returned my call and spent plenty of time learning about my case. He left no detail uncovered. He explained everything to me in simple terms and told me exactly what to do and how to do it - all in the most professional way possible. The thing that impressed me most about Mr. Brown was that he took a personal interest in me. He learned that I was now a pastor and we worked together to explain in great detail to the courts how my life had changed for the better since that unfortunate day back in 2000. He worked with me on how to get the needed documents and he did all the rest! His summary to the courts requesting the expungements was incredible and beyond thorough! George was the FIRST person who was actually able to discover why my case was so complex. It was because the courts had made a mistake back in 2000 and improperly filed my paperwork and the charges were not accurately documented. This had caused me a headache of immense proportions. Mr. Brown attacked it head on, the whole time giving me his direct phone number so I could stay in constant contact with him. Most every time he took my call immediately and if he was in court, he would ALWAYS call me immediately afterwards. The biggest issue I've had with attorneys in the past is their lack of follow up, and this is definitely not a problem with George. This guy took a personal interest in my story, what happened, and what I have been doing in my life over the past 18 years since the event. I know in my heart, and I am a good judge of character, that George wanted to help me personally - it was not about the money for him. He truly wanted to see me get a fresh start in life and not have to be punished for a stupid mistake I made almost 20 years ago. Mr. Brown would contact me every time there was an update and even sometimes when there was no new news, just to keep in touch with me. The reason my case took a little longer than normal to resolve was because the courts did not keep records of my case and it was a mess. George tackled this issue "head on" and every week when he was in front of the judge who was assigned to my case, he would gently inquire with her to see that the process was moving along. I know for a fact that this effort of his was instrumental in both expungements finally being granted. If it was not for George, I know I would be still fighting this and trying to get information. I thank the good Lord that I found Mr. Brown and I know it was Divine Providence because no other lawyer (and I have had many during my time as a business owner) has ever taken so much personal interest, care and and effort to help me. And the amazing thing is that I paid him a flat fee up front, so he could have "coasted" and not really focused on my case. But he did the opposite. He was constantly working on it and texting me and calling me with updates. I could not be more pleased with him and his professional approach. I am taking him out to dinner when I get back to Michigan. If you need a lawyer, this is your guy!

criminal defense

Mr. Brown was hired to defend our son after another criminal lawyer did an extremely poor job of defending him against false felony charges in a computer crime case. On the advice of this lawyer, our son was about to accept a plea bargain for two felonies and worse. On the day before the plea was to ...be accepted, Mr. Brown came in and rescued the case. He successfully turned the case into a minor misdemeanor after much interaction with a very stubborn DA who tried to stonewall and block his efforts. This was an extremely stressful time for our family and through it all, Mr. Brown patiently explained all steps, procedures and possible outcomes. He returned all calls in a very timely manner and kept us informed at all times. He sent us all briefs that were presented to the judge and DA as well as copies of reports from expert witnesses-there was complete transparency and honesty. We felt very secure with him handling the case and our faith was rewarded in the outcome. He was masterful in court- he had control at all times. Our son could very well have been ruined by a system that wanted to destroy him, but Mr. Brown believed him. He told us, " I won't let you down". And he didn't. When our faith in the justice system was at rock bottom, Mr. Brown revived it.
