When the demanding telephone calls started and we began researching the Internet to determine if the calls for repayment were legitimate, the results didn't look good. "Another ripoff scam artist that thinks they've found easy pickings after my bankruptcy," I said to myself. These old unsecured stude...nt loans from my son received payments from the Chapter 13 and I assumed the debts were discharged. But the phone calls continued and multiplied. "Maybe you should call The StudentLoan Layer," my bankruptcy attorney said. So I did. The results were informative, I didn't get angry, and the consultation gave me a way forward. The bad news: the debts were still valid even though they received payments from the bankruptcy court. The truth: offer them a one time settlement. "Remember, you are in charge of the process," Mr. Cohen said several times. "If the collection agency gets rude, hang up on them." I wrote a letter to the collection agency, along with an initial check to stop the harassing telephone calls. At this point it is unclear whether they will accept my proposed settlement. But Mr. Cohen's consultation was invaluable. I will recommend him to anyone who needs sound advice.
