Why the AVVO rating is false and mis-leading
AVVO claims it's "rating" gives you a basis to compare lawyers to find a highly "rated" lawyer you can trust. That's a lie.
Why the ratings are pure consumer fraudAVVO claims it's ratings are based on input from lawyers and consumers and are an accurate reflection of the competence of a particular attorney. That is totally false. It's ratings are based mostly on "peer reviews" and internet presence, which is fabricated by AVVO and the lawyer being reviewed. Some of the "10" rated attorneys on AVVO are barely out of law school, and simply got all their law school friends to give them good "peer reviews", often without any knowledge of whether that particular attorney has even practiced in the area of law they claim to be highly rated in!
The ratings do't take into account the area of practiceThe practice of law is very specialized. For instance, I know nothing about taxation practice, but I have been a criminal defense attorney for 25 years and I am highly knowledgeable about that area. Just as a podiatrist wouldn't try to do heart surgery, a tax lawyer shouldn't be holding themselves out to be an expert in criminal law. But AVVO makes no distinction between area of practice, and many of their "10" rated attorneys have qualifications that might serve them in one area of law, but they would have absolutely nothing to do with another area. The AVVO rating is basically telling you an attorney is highly rated, without any regard for the area of specialization. That is absurd and blatantly misleading. Would you give a doctor a 10 rating in heart surgery if he was a podiatrist and never performed a heart surgery? Of course not! The AVVO rating does exactly that! It's totally false!
