Why does it take so long to get Social Security disability benefits?

When a new client calls, I always tell them that it can take two years or more to get approved for Social Security disability benefits. Sometimes people get through faster, but it's always better to assume that it's going to take a long time. The question remains, why does it take so long?

Social Security does not drag its feet on purpose. There are a lot of medical records and decisions to make. Everyone is doing their job as best they can.
