What To Do If You're Stopped for a DUI
Here's the best way to handle how to avoid incriminating yourself in the event you get pulled over for a DUI investigation.
The StopWhen you see you've be lighted up by a patrol car, pull over promptly to a safe area. Open both front windows, and your sunroof (if you have one) as soon as possible, to let fresh air in the cabin. If you are on the freeway, signal and take the next available exit; do not stop on the freeway.
When the officer approaches, have both of your hands on the steering wheel, plainly visible, to demonstrate you appreciate concerns about officer safety. When the officer asks for license and registration, tell him where you think these items are before you reach for them.
The InterrogationAmong the first questions the officer is likely to ask you is "Have you had anything to drink tonight?" Do not answer that directly. Say you feel perfectly fine and competent to drive. If he presses the point, reiterate your position on this but then say that if he feels otherwise you would be happy to provide a blood test.
