What to do after a car or trucking accident
This guide will help you navigate the immediate aftermath of being injured in a car or tractor-trailer accident.
At the sceneIf you are able, or someone on you behalf, take multiple pictures of the scene, damages to all vehicles involved, and your injuries.
Obtain names, telephone numbers and contact information for any witnesses.
Make note of the weather and road conditions.
Seek immediate medical treatment. Oftentimes adrenaline after an accident prevents you from realizing the full extent of your injuries. Go to the emergency room. Go in an ambulance if you can. Obtain any and all suggested treatment and tests.
Inform your insurance company of the accident so you don't lose out on any potential uninsured motorist claim.
Start a diary. Each day take note of pain, treatment, days off of work, and any other relevant information.
Within a week of the accidentFollow up on all medical treatment. Go to your primary care doctor and obtain appointments with any specialists that may be needed (orthopedic, neurologist, plastic surgeon, dentist).
Call the police records department and obtain a copy of the police report.
Contact a competent personal injury lawyer as soon as possible. Do not sign up with anyone making unsolicited calls to your home, cell phone or place of business.
