If you are about to go through a divorce in Florida, the first thing you should do is contact an attorney to find out what your rights are and what you are entitled to in the state of Florida. The first document that is filed is called a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage which is served on the other party. That person then has 20 days to answer that petition. Then that person files responsive pleadings asking the court for what that person wants. After the initial pleadings and responsive pleadings are filed, there is approximately 45 - 60 days of discovery. After discovery, the next step is mediation. If you settle at mediation, then there is a short final hearing. If you do not settle at final hearing, the next step is trial which is approximately 2 - 3 months after mediation. If custody is at issue, then there is usually another 3 -4 months added on to the timeline for the custody evaluation/social investigation.
