What is the purpose of obtaining uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage?

The purpose of obtaining that type of insurance coverage is if you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident who does not have insurance or they don't have enough insurance, and you're medical bills are such that you need more money for compensation or you've lost income or you've incurred out-of-pocket expenses that the other insurance company does not have enough money to give to you. You can then turn to your insurance company to pay the difference. Without that, there are many people that are severely injured and the person that has injured them or hit them doesn't have any insurance at all. In that event, if you don't have uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, you may be caught without any compensation at all.
