What is a "Personal Injury" Lawyer & Why Would I Need One?
A BRIEF introduction to the world of Personal Injury Law for the average Joe.
"Yea, I was Injured, but whats all this 'I need a lawyer' talk?"You have experienced an injury.
Maybe it was a car wreck. Someone rear ended you and you now wake up with a new and unwanted loyal companion: back pain.
Maybe you were curling your hair with what you thought was the "amazon's choice" five star curling iron, only to have it turn itself on without your knowledge and take the first layer of skin off your hand.
Maybe it was extremely serious. What happens when your loved one is taken from you unexpectedly and you get the feeling someone is at fault or that someone could have prevented such a horrible and tragic situation from ever occurring?
The possibilities are endless and so are the consequences. The question is, what are you to do?
Simply put, if you don't have someone to help you resolve these sorts of issues, they will likely just go away. The person who is at fault for causing your injury or who acted negligently resulting in serious harm to you or your loved ones will likely extend an admittedly heartfelt "Im sorry," but beyond that, the issue will die, along with your rights if you wait to long.
America is the most profitable, beautiful and free place on this earth, but its citizens are not immune to acting in their own selfish interests most of the time, especially when it comes to money. This is why you need someone to help you make things right. A special someone. Someone who has experience in making people realize how and when they acted in a way that could have (and usually did) cause harm to another. A lawyer is the only type of individual with this power. Without a lawyer it is nearly impossible to hold other responsible for their negligent (or intentional) actions. This is the Personal Injury Lawyers #1 purpose: to hold others accountable for harming you.
So.....back to action. "What should I do?" ...... You need to hire a Personal Injury Lawyer!
What is a "Personal Injury" Lawyer? From Wikipedia: A personal injury lawyer is a lawyer who provides legal services to those who claim to have been injured, physically or psychologically, as a result of the negligence of another person, company, government agency or any entity ......(< pretty accurate if I say so myself!!!).......
Basically, a personal injury lawyer is specialized in helping those who have experienced injury (in the many different forms and circumstances it arises from) get reimbursement for $ spent on medical bills, $ for pain and suffering, $ for loss wages and the loss of enjoyment of life that can result as well as other pecuniary and non-pecuniary damages ("pecuniary" means $ or economically valued/based).
Of course, the Personal Injury lawyer has a lot of work to do to make sure you get this reimbursement. Its complicated making insurance companies, individuals, corporations, etc. pay you for your loss. As nice as these people/companies are (or would have the general public believe), they are attached to their money. They like it. They love having it and they certainly don't want to just give it up to some who claims to have been injured as a result of something they might have done. Its usually an all out fight. A battle of wits and evidence. To get good results, you need the right lawyer.
"Aren't all Lawyers the same?"Only those who have experience and specifically specialize in the arena of Personal Injury Law should be handling these cases. Why is that? Well, its because you (the client) deserve sufficient, if not outstanding representation - and the amount of reimbursement ($) you receive in the end is highly determined by the lawyer you choose. There are many people who claim to be Injury lawyers, but practice in other areas as well. This is fine and they certainly have the right to do so, but I believe that this area of law is an all or nothing proposition and it takes dedication to the area and skill to achieve the great results for clients.
With the same case and same facts, different lawyers can and will achieve different results for the client. Very good lawyers have the ability to get the absolute most possible $ for their client, sometimes in the millions of dollars. Average - low end lawyers claiming to be "Injury" lawyers (but practice in a wide variety of other areas as well) generally obtain that type of result - average/low. Its that simple. If you want the best chance of success and you want the most reimbursement/most money for your damages, you will need a specialist. I highly urge you to vet your potential lawyers and get the feel for how good they are and how much time they give to the area of Personal Injury Law. Also, I hope you have a long, worthwhile life full of happiness and growth. Cheers.
