What if my parents aren’t home when I get out of school?
Having undocumented parents is a stressful nightmare kids across the country live with everyday. ‘What would happen to me if my parents get deported”, they ask themselves everyday. Its hard to have this conversation with your kids...but you HAVE too.
Talk to your kidsExplain your situation as best you can and in accordance with their age level. Give them emergency contacts they can call if they fear you are in immigration detention or have been deported. You should share with them how to access bank accounts if needed, if they are old enough, in your absence. Share with them all social media contacts and contacts in your home country, as well, should they need to search for you.
Have a Plan in PlaceYou should have the name of an immigration lawyer your kids can contact for you. There are attorneys who can prepare documents a court or school would need if your kids would find themselves without their parents; such as a trust, a power of attorney and many other documents that must be done by a licensed experienced attorney.
