At your arraignment you are informed of the charges against you and you may enter a plea. Sometimes your lawyer will not want you to enter a plea because he will want to challenge the complaint first. You will also be asked in both misdemeanor and felony arraignments whether you wish a speedy trial. The rule of thumb is that if you are in custody you do. If you are out you don't care. But there are many exceptions.
If you are in custody questions of bail and OR will be worked out. That's why a speedy arraignment is so important.
When Will I Be Arraigned or How Speedy Is Speedy?
In CA, you must be arraigned withing 48 hours of your arrest excluding weekends and holidays. If you were arrested Friday night and Monday was a holiday you would not be arraigned until Tuesday or even Wednesday. Moral: don't get arrested at the start of a long weekend. Thus even if you could afford to bail out it wouldn't likely happen until a judge had fixed your bail.
