What does it cost to hire a personal injury lawyer?

What is the cost of hiring a personal injury attorney? You may have heard the phrase used in lawyer advertisements that says "We don't get paid unless you do." Is that phrase true? It is. Most personal injury attorneys work on a contingency fee agreement. These won't require that you pay an attorney based on an hourly rate, but rather as a percentage of the value of the case. When you sign up with a lawyer you will both agree on a percentage rate at the beginning of a case.

Generally, contingency fees can range from 33 - 45% of the total recovery. This may depend upon the attorney, circumstances of the accident, and how quickly the case settles or whether or not it goes all the way to trial.

Hiring an attorney on a contingency basis can be very helpful for many facing a lawsuit after a serious accident. Often an attorney will cover upfront costs of a personal injury case, making it possible for people of all types of means able to hire a competent legal representative.

Whatever you decide - it's important to take some time to explore options after a serious crash. After seeking medical care, consult with an attorney and ask them if they work on a contingency fee basis and about their rates.
