What Are the Risks of Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Posted by attorney Joseph Lichtenstein

When people are experiencing difficulties losing weight through exercise and healthy eating, they may turn to weight loss surgery in an effort to get a jump start. Even though this type of surgery is recommended by doctors, there are many risks that patients need to be aware of.

Gastric bypass is a surgery of the digestive system which reduces how much nutrients are absorbed as well as limits the amount the patient is able to eat. Whether it is because food and exercise are not working or due to a serious health condition, gastric bypass is one of the most common types of weight loss surgeries in the U.S. Another reason it is so common is because doctors favor it over other forms of surgery because it does not have as many complications. Even so, there are side effects and risks that you need to be aware of.

What are some of the reasons gastric bypass surgery may be recommended? Gastroesophageal reflux disease, a stroke, diabetes, and other health complications can mean that losing weight quickly is necessary and even life-saving. In order to be a good candidate for gastric bypass surgery, their body mass index (BMI) has to be 40 or higher or a BMI of above 30 coupled with a serious health complication. Following the surgery, the patient will be required to follow a long-term plan regarding exercise and a change of eating habits. Not everyone meets the medical requirements nor is everyone able to afford this surgery.

Following the surgery, there are certain side effects which the individual needs to be aware of. From bleeding to infections, these health risks could come up after any type of surgery. Some patients do not react well to the anesthesia and so are left dealing with complications from being put to sleep. Also, blood clots and leaks in the gastrointestinal system may occur which could in turn lead to further concerns. In extreme cases, death may even result from these complications.

Sometimes the surgery appears to have been successful only to realize weeks or even months later that all is not well. Hernias, stomach perforation, and gallstones could all arise as complications of the surgery. If not caught and treated in time, the patient could be left with serious and even life-threatening illnesses. Medicine is not an exact science and there will always be differences regarding how a patient will react. Sometimes side effects will arise due to no fault of the doctor, but in other cases the complications could occur because of medical malpractice.

Gastric bypass malpractice should not be tolerated and by filing a claim, you could hold the negligent doctor responsible for their negligence. Whether they made an error during surgery or failed to diagnose a post-operative side effect, you could receive compensation for surgery and medical treatment which was required to correct the complication. For more information, it is strongly advised that you have an attorney on your side investigating your case and standing up for your rights.
