Self InsuredEmployers can self insure in California. There are special guidelines and requirements for them to do so. Also, industries may self insure as a group. You can go to the Department of Industrial Relations website to obtain the names of the Self Insureds
Legally UninsuredVery Few entities can be legally uninsured. One of them is the State of California.
Illegally UninsuredThere are Employers who either never took out insurance coverage or who let their policies lapse. They are considered "illegally uninsured." They can either pay out the claim themselves. If they do not, there is a special fund from the State of California which adjusts "illegally uninsured" claims. It is the Uninsured Employers Benefit Trust Fund.
