The Three Categories Of Distracted Driving
Thousands of people are injured or killed each year due to a distracted driver. Traffic professionals generally classify distracted driving into three main categories. Texting is especially dangerous because it involves all three types of distracted driving. What are these categories? They are:
Manual DistractionsManual distractions are activities where a driver moves his or her hands from controlling the car. An example would be the driver reaching into the backseat for something while still driving.
Visual DistractionsVisual distractions are activities where a driver focuses his or her eyes away from the roadway. An example would be a driver looking into the backseat while the car moves forward. Another example would be the driver trying to read a map while still driving down the road.
Cognitive DistractionsCognitive distractions are activities where a driver's mind wanders from his or her task of driving. These drivers are not focused mentally on their driving.
