The right to a court appointed lawyer in Tennessee

Not every case entitles you to a court appointed lawyer and not everyone is entitled to a free lawyer. Review the list below to see if your case will qualify you for a court appointed attorney.

8-14-101. Indigent person -- Defined.
For the purposes of this part, an "indigent person" is one who does not possess sufficient means to pay reasonable compensation for the services of a competent attorney:(1) In any criminal prosecution or juvenile delinquency proceeding involving a possible deprivation of liberty; or
(2) In any habeas corpus or other post-conviction proceeding.
