The Oakland County Work-Release Program
Judgment of SentenceFirst, you must be sentenced by the court. You cannot enter into the WRTP unless and until you have been sentenced in your case. If you are expecting a sentence that will include some jail time, then you want to be sure to discuss the possibility of the WRTP with your lawyer so that all necessary arrangements can be made, and so that you optimize your chances to be successfully processed and accepted into the program.
The WRTP is run by the Oakland County Sheriff Department. The Sheriff has the primary responsibility of operating the Oakland County Jail.
Employment Verification LetterYou will need a contemporaneous letter verifying your employment that is signed by your supervisor or by someone on behalf of the company. The person signing the verification letter cannot be you.
The letter must bear a valid address and working phone number for the company. The employer verification letter cannot have a PO Box as the address or it will be rejected.
The employment verification letter must also reference you by name, identify your supervisor, and contain a brief job description, work schedule, and wage rate. It is very important to have your schedule and location correct as the GPS tether will establish a "work inclusion zone" which will be monitored with reports being sent to your probation officer. The data must reflect that you are where you are supposed to be thus, it is important to "get it right" on the paperwork. Chances are your employer will not have much experience filling out such a letter. Therefore it will be up to you to be sure it is correct.
You Are Being MonitoredAs stated above, once you provide the Sheriff with accurate information about your employment, a "work inclusion zone" will be established where you are allowed to be during your work shift. All individuals sentenced to the WRTP cannot use illegal drugs or consume alcohol during their participation in this program.
The Sheriff's RESULTS program will conduct the necessary drug and alcohol testing. Sites are maintained in Waterford, MI and Troy, MI. Some participants will also have a IV-CAP alcohol monitoring device affixed to their ankle [sometimes referred to as an alcohol tether]. Missed tests or a positive result could mean that you will be terminated from the WRTP, and you will be sent back to the Oakland County Jail to complete your sentence.
Obviously, any new criminal activity also will result in immediate termination from the Sheriff's WRTP.
Fees and Costs for the WRTPIn August 2012, a per diem rate went into effect. The WRTP now costs participants $11.25 per day. In addition, a non-refundable processing fee of $112.50 is charged and applied toward the first 10-days into the program.
If ordered, the IV-CAP Alcohol Monitoring Tether will cost $157.50 initially and charges at the rate of $15.75 per day. The alcohol tether monitors the participants skin and sweat for alcohol; the presence of any alcohol in the blood-stream will result in an alcohol event which is reported to the monitoring agency and, eventually, to the probation officer.
