In Strongsville, Ohio, a teenager suffered such severe injuries in a motorcycle accident in June that doctors needed to amputate one of his legs.
The 19-year-old had graduated from Strongsville High School in 2011. He is currently studying to be a radiology technician. He also works at Dairy Queen and Home Depot, a job that he loves. But these things have been put on hold temporarily by the motorcycle accident that he experienced several weeks ago.
He was riding his motorcycle in Valley City on Route 303 early in the morning on June 9. But the vehicle in front of him made an unexpected left turn and hew was unable to stop before colliding with the vehicle and he was thrown 30 feet from from his bike. There is no doubt that the helmet he was wearing saved his life, but he still sustained serious injuries to the rest of his body.
Though his helmet protected him from suffering a traumatic brain injury, the rest of his body had no protection, and on one leg his hip was shattered, his foot was crushed, and arteries were severed. He was rushed by helicopter to Akron General Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to repair his hip. He also lost a huge amount of blood and needed several blood transfusions. The surgery to rebuild his hip socket took four hours and was a success, but doctors were unable to save Watson’s foot and amputated just below the knee.
The teen is currently using a wheelchair, crutches, and a walker to get around and is undergoing intensive in-patient rehabilitation. He will eventually be fitted for a prosthetic foot.
He has been receiving a lot of support from his family and his community. His mother has said "He's very motivated to go back to what he was doing before. He's had to deal with the emotional acceptance and grieving for his leg. But he's doing great." And the community has come together to organize a fundraiser to raise funds to help cover some of the medical expenses that have been rapidly accumulating over the last few weeks.
The driver of the car involved in the accident was not injured.
With any accident, the cost can be huge. In addition to physical injuries that accident victims must cope with, and the added emotional stress, there are medical expenses, lost wages, and property damage to consider. Serious injuries will most likely require ongoing medical treatment, rehab, medication, and adaptive devices. And with motorcycle accidents, the chances of serious injuries are much higher. This can be a lot for families to handle.
