The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is a Caribbean territory of the United States, once controlled by Spain prior to the Treaty of Paris in 1898. This marked the beginning of an era under U.S. authority. Today, over 100 years after the U.S. acquired Puerto Rico, the Island residents are U.S. citizens.
