NYC Tenants have the right to heat in their homes in the winter.
Heat RequirementsBurrr*. It*s that time of the year again! During the months of October 1 through May 31 NYC landlords are required to ensure that apartments are reasonably heated. What does that mean* Between 6am and 10pm if the outside is colder than 55 degrees the inside must be at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit.
Hot water is also a requirement, 365 days a year at a constant minimum temp of 120 degrees.
So what do you do if you don*t have proper heat?(1) try to resolve the problem with your landlord.
(2) Take temperature readings and record them.
(3) send your Landlord a certified letter about the condition.
(4) Call 311 or use their mobile app make a complaint have the City inspect the conditions.
(5) Call a landlord tenant attorney.
