Moral Character Application, State Bar of California
The moral character application is more important than the Bar Exam.
Law StudentsAll law students must fill out a moral character application. It is perhaps the most important part of the admission process. Your answers will be compared to those you listed on your law school application, perhaps your undergradutate application too. If you are expecting any problems, or if you get follow up inquiry for further explanation, you should probably hire counsel.
Registered In House CounselIf you apply to be RIHC in California, you have to submit a moral character application. You don't get a free pass because your home state admitted you. Passage of time does not eliminate the need to explain past issues.
Lateral TransfersThe most common problem for a lateral transfer is the unauthorized practice of law in California prior to your actual admission. The UPL rules of California and of your other state may not be the same. Even the way you are listed on your law firm's website can create issues.
