The importance of retaining your divorce decree

Posted by attorney Howard Lewis

After your marriage is legally terminated, you will need a copy of your divorce decree if you want to change your name or your marital status. Such changes include:

  • Legally changing your name after divorce
  • Changing the name in your driver's license
  • Changing the name in your passport
  • Changing your name in the Social Security system
  • Legally remarrying

Divorce decrees are the most important document to have when you are required to show proof that you are legally divorced.
