Just like preparing a tax return, be sure to have your household numbers:
1) How old are you?
2) How old is your spouse?
3) How many people live at your home?
4) What is the combined household income?
5) How many kids do you have under the age of 25 living at the household?
Input the Numbers Into the Federal Calculator
Under the ACA, many many individuals and families will be eligible to receive subsidized health care coverage in their state's Qualified Health Care Plan Exchange. In Washington State, the federal calculator is available here: http://www.wahealthplanfinder.org/calculator/index.html
Select A Plan Level
Once you learn from the calculator's estimate whether you qualify for an exemption, you must decide what plan level you want to purchase.
There are four plan levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Bronze and Silver are cheaper than the other two, but have higher deductibles and co-pays. All plans must offer similar minimum coverage, including: prescription drugs, maternity and newborn care, lab services, emergency services and preventive and wellness care.
All plans cannot deny coverage or charge higher premiums for pre-existing conditions.
Shop around in your state's Qualified Health Plan (QHP) markeplace. Each state must offer an "exchange" by October 1, 2013. WA already has its exchange online. See the link below.
Each exchange lists only QHPs. QHPs are health insurance companies that are pre-approved by a state to offer coverage to state residents.
In addition to a state's exchange, there are private listings of QHPs. One marketplace available to consumers already is GetInsured - www.getinsured.com
