If you paid in full to purchase the vehicle, use that amount. If you financed your purchase, add the amount of any down payment plus periodic payments paid on the loan. If you leased, add the security deposit, other fees paid to obtain the lease and all lease payments.
Add Collateral Charges
This includes costs wholly incurred as a result of the acquisition of the vehicle but not included in the purchase or lease price. Examples could include window tinting, extended warranties, etc.
Add or Subtract Trade-In (if applicable)
Use the net trade-in allowance at the time of the trade-in, if agreed to by both parties. If not, the NADA Official Used Car Guide (Southeastern Edition) in effect at the time of the trade-in will be used. If this results in a positive number, add it to the foregoing. If not, subtract.
Subtract the Reasonable Offset for Use
Determine how much mileage you put on the vehicle. Multiply that number by the purchase price (or agreed upon value of a leased vehicle). Divide that number by 120,000 (or 60,000 if the vehicle is a recreation vehicle). This figure represents the Reasonable Offset for Use.
Add Incidental Charges
These are amounts incurred as a direct result of the problem(s). Examples could include towing charges, rental car costs, etc.
